Last Weekend in Lima

June 2nd:

Today we started the day at UARM for our seminar. After seminar, we went to a small café near the school and I had a chocolate smoothie that was delicious! It tasted like a peanut butter, banana sandwich with chocolate. After this we went back to UARM and ate lunch. Following lunch, we went to Pachacamac whish is an archaeological site in Lima. This was a cool experience to see. It’s weird to see the site and imagine people living here. Following Pachacamac, we headed back home and had to get ready for a Brisas de Titicaca show. But before the show, we went to Dr. Gibson’s hostel to shower. Why? Good question, because we have NO water. Unfortunately, there is construction being done on our street and this is messing up our water situation which means we have no water and haven’t had any for about a week and a half. Thank you, Dr. Gibson, for allowing us to shower at your hostel, much appreciated! The Brisas de Titicaca show was very interesting. It was nice to attend a show that exposes you to the various dances and music throughout Peru.

June 3rd:

Free weekend for us! Today we decided to go to Plaza Real which is a mall. We went to the mall and just spent some time walking around until we decide to eat. As you might be able to tell, we like to eat (: We tried the restaurant Tanta and it was delicious! I had lomo saltado and it was amazing, After Tanta, we decided to head back home. We all relaxed for a while until we decided to go out and celebrate our last weekend in Lima.

June 4th:

Happy Sunday! We officially have two weeks left in Peru. Where has time gone? These next two weeks are going to be super busy but exciting! Today we went to Barranco and tried out Burrito Bar that was recommended by various people. The burrito I ordered was huge…and delicious! After Burrito Bar, we went down to the ocean. We took a few minutes and just relaxed. After the ocean, we couldn’t resist but to get some gelato. YUM!!! After gelato, we called it a day and headed home.

I think in education, there are various political and ethical activity, whether it’s intended or not, it’s present. However, I wouldn’t say there is always this kind of activity. Politics can intertwine with ethics which can lead to bad results. For example, in the Atlanta article about the school cheating scandal, we can see that politics and ethics were both present in this situation. When I think about this situation, I can't help but think about what is actually going on in the classroom. Are these teachers actually trying to teach these students? Did they do in the interest of the school? After reading the Brighouse article, I think to myself about how politics focuses a lot on education, but not in the way we would hope for. It’s more of a competition and investment of students when it comes to politics and education. To me, it seems like schools just want the best for the school rather than their students. This leads me to think of students as objects and how the state looks or the best students to invest in. To me, this seems ironic considering students go to school in hope for an education but instead they are just being tested and invested in. I find it important, as a pre-service teacher, to ask myself what my actions will lead to. How will this affect me? How will this affect my students? What can I do inside my classroom that will change these students in an educational way? It’s crucial that we understand the consequences of an action and think before we act on a certain situation.

Smiles,

Liz
